A few years back, I took a deep breath and had fitted furniture installed in my study. It isn't a big room, so it's important to use the space well, especially as I spend more time in it (awake) than any other room in the house.

I've been very pleased with the results, including the fact that most of the rats nest of cabling that seems to go with any PC is neatly hidden away under the desk. However (you could see that coming, couldn't you?) it's a real pain when I need to install something new. Every power socket is full (and I have two 4-way power blocks) and the cable tray is overflowing.

I happened to mention to the lodger at the end of last week that the network-attached storage (NAS) I use for backup is getting a little long in the tooth (as these things go) and starting to make alarming noises. As its younger sister failed catastrophically at the beginning of the year, it felt like time to replace it. So yesterday, the postman delivered a nice shiny new piece of NAS, the size of the palm of my hand. And all I have to do is crawl around under the desk in the dark for an hour wrestling with cables...

In other news, it is piddling down with rain outside, so I shall be making pepperpot this afternoon to brighten up the day. Lots of chillies and peppercorns and allspice and red and yellow peppers, and onion and garlic and butternut squash, beef and coconut milk. Half to be eaten tonight with a hunk of bread to soak up the yummy liquid, and half to go in the freezer against another miserable day.
