Riffing on oursin's entry Other things that women could be in The Past....I recently watched a BBC(?) programme on the railways in India. It had too many problems to enumerate, but mentioned (almost in passing) Alice Tredwell, the widow of a railway engineer who died shortly after arriving in India to "construct" — i.e. to manage the construction of — the Bhore Ghat railway incline. Alice, according to the BBC programme, took over management of the construction — according to various places on teh Web, she appointed other engineers to do so but "oversaw" their work. Which might not be so awesome as managing the work directly — and significantly less awesome than if the local population had been left to determine their own direction — but still...
