1. The sparrowhawk was in the garden again this morning, perched on the ball atop the obelisk, waiting for breakfast to happen by. S/he has been to visit every morning this week, causing the bird feeders to be deserted and the garden silent, and is glorious to watch. I don't resent a sparrowhawk feeding on the birds that I feed: without the kills s/he makes so efficiently and mercilessly, s/he'd starve, whereas the neighbourhood cats — collared and belled — are sleek and never in need of their prey, however much their instincts urge them on. If I see a cat lying in wait (or suspect that one lurks underneath a bush), I'll go out into the garden and the birds will leave. I do make an exception for the wood pigeons, which are so stupid and plentiful that I can't get upset about the regular drifts of grey and white pigeon feathers that adorn the lawn. (And it's as likely as not that the sparrowhawk has had them, which makes me doubly happy).
2. I bought an ereader — a Sony PRS-650 Touch Edition — and am very pleased with it. It comes with a stylus so finger prints don't have to be a problem (I knew from experience with several iPaqs that I'm happy with a stylus). It's light — as light as the average paperback — and the screen is a good size and easy on the eyes. Also, the user interface is tolerable (note: I was renowned at work back in the day for tolerating mediocre user interfaces, but this one is as good as any). I'm using Calibre to manage the library rather than the Sony Library software, since I already have a extensive library in Calibre and there's no compelling reason to change. So far, I prefer it to paper books, as long as the price of the ebook is right; and if it isn't, I'll still buy paper while there's room left on the shelves.
3. Does anybody else wish that DW/LJ converted -- automatically into — ? Or is it just me....
4.Back in September, I grabbed a few days in Pembrokeshire, in the Pembrokeshire Record Office and various graveyards (yes, Family History as a hobby is *that* interesting). I've spared you the graveyards and the tithe maps, but this (near where some ancestors lived) pleased me:
5. Scrivener for Windows! In case you were interested.
